Respect the Process (So You Don’t Screw Everything Up)

If you’re anything like me, you want everything 5 minutes ago. I find that a lot of achievers are this way. Our efficiency and momentum is how we get things done, but it becomes an Achilles’ heel if not checked.

As we mature and understand life’s journey, we start to see how important process is to our growth and evolution. Think about it: there’s a process to life’s most meaningful experiences. From childbirth and weight loss to starting a business or getting married, there’s a process. And many times, we wish the process was shorter.

This is especially true when it comes to things like grieving and success. We want to quickly get past the difficult moments to brighter days, and we want to push fast forward to get through the difficulties and experience success. While it makes sense, it doesn’t serve us because process is where preparation happens. Consider the reasons we advise children to wait to experience things reserved for adulthood. We understand that they need to mature before they can handle certain experiences. This never stops being true for us. We’re all growing into our next seasons. In fact, our goals are given to us a size too big so we can grow into them.

You may have had the experience of wishing for something and receiving it only to realize that you got it too soon. In that moment, you get that the process, even if you can’t see it, is important to your ability to fully experience and appreciate what you wanted.

What process are you frustrated with right now? Maybe it’s the promotion you want or the growth of your business. Or maybe your relationship isn’t moving along as quickly as you’d like.

Remember that patience is the art of waiting. Process is a prerequisite for success.
